“Must Balance Technology Development with Flexible Regulations”
Prof. Hahn Jungpil from the National University of Singapore explains that the global AI race is driven by three key factors: data, computing power, and AI models. While the United States leads in AI models and China is rapidly expanding computing capabilities through large investments, both countries have an advantage because of their access to massive amounts of data. Prof. Han emphasizes that data is one of the hardest resources to build, creating challenges for countries like Korea that want to compete in AI development.
Prof. Hahn highlights that the rise of agentic AI is accelerating corporate demand for AI investment because companies now see AI as a tool that can perform tasks and transform business operations. However, he stresses that AI development should not focus only on technological progress but must also consider ethical issues, responsible design, and governance. Strong investment in AI research, talent development, and infrastructure is necessary to remain competitive.
The professor suggests that governments should provide long-term R&D funding while maintaining flexible AI regulations that encourage innovation. Using Singapore as an example, he explains that balanced policies can support AI growth without placing excessive burdens on businesses. He concludes that the future of AI requires a careful balance between technological advancement, ethical responsibility, and adaptable regulation to ensure sustainable industry growth.
