The Responsible AI UK International Research Sandpit, co-hosted with the NExT++ Research Center at the National University of Singapore, convened 18 researchers from the UK and Singapore to tackle one of today’s most pressing challenges: advancing responsible AI assurance across diverse cultural and regulatory environments. Designed as an intensive, interdisciplinary workshop, the sandpit encouraged participants to develop innovative research ideas and build long-term collaborations that extend beyond national boundaries.

Among the mentors was Professor Jungpil Hahn from the National University of Singapore, who guided discussions on how trust, governance, and collaboration must evolve alongside rapid advances in AI. From Prof. Hahn’s perspective, responsible AI cannot rely solely on technical solutions—it requires integrating human, organizational, and societal considerations into the design, deployment, and assurance of AI systems. By bringing together experts with diverse disciplinary backgrounds, the sandpit created an environment where different perspectives could shape more robust and globally relevant approaches to AI governance.

The programme concluded with research proposals, peer feedback, and a funding clinic, laying the foundation for future UK–Singapore partnerships in responsible AI. More than a research workshop, the sandpit demonstrated how international collaboration can accelerate the development of trustworthy AI by combining technical expertise with shared values, cross-cultural understanding, and evidence-based AI assurance. These collaborations will help ensure that AI innovation remains responsible, inclusive, and beneficial across different societies.
